Microplastics in Tap Water: What Homeowners Need to Know

Microplastics in Tap Water: What Homeowners Need to Know

August 7, 2025 By Brent D. Hershey Leave a Comment

Microplastics are appearing in tap water nationwide. These tiny pieces of plastic create genuine concerns over water quality, health, and what we drink daily.

At Tri-County Water Services, we think safe water should be the norm. This article explains what microplastics are, why they’re significant, and how you can safeguard your home.

What Are Microplastics?

Microplastics are small plastic fragments, fewer than 5 millimeters in width. They are derived from:

  • Plastic waste that has degraded
  • Synthetic clothing fibers when washed
  • Personal care products such as scrubs
  • Plastic packaging that finds its way into water sources

Once in the water cycle, they’re difficult to remove without proper treatment.

Are They Really in My Tap Water?

Yes. Microplastics have been detected in tap water globally, including in the U.S. Few public water systems are designed to capture such small particles. Even treated water may introduce microplastics into your home.

That’s why it makes sense to take special precautions to safeguard your water.

How Microplastics Can Harm Your Health

Research is ongoing, but initial studies suggest potential health threats:

  • Body inflammation
  • Hormone and metabolism effects
  • Possible effect on fertility and growth

The long-term consequences aren’t yet fully understood. But everyone agrees, less exposure is best.

What You Can Do: Filtration That Works

Good news! The right filtration systems can help.
Here’s what we suggest:

  • Reverse osmosis systems: extremely effective at eliminating microplastics
  • Whole-house filters: shield every faucet and fixture
  • UV and sediment filters: provide additional protection when combined with other systems

We can analyze your water and advise you on the most suitable installation for your residence.

Pure water makes a difference. Should you be worried about microplastics or you wish to better your water quality, we are here to assist.
