Which Water Softener Is Best for Me?

There are several factors to consider when comparing water softeners. One of the most important is capacity. The capacity of a water softener is measured in grains.

On average, a gallon of water in the United States has 10 grains of hardness per gallon. The average person uses 80 gallons of water per day. Based on these metrics, a household with five people would need a water softener that can handle a capacity of 4,000 grains per day, or 28,000 grains per week.

Most household water softeners have a capacity of 32,000 grains.

Another factor to consider when choosing a water softener is how it regenerates. There are three methods of water softener regeneration:

  • Meter Regenerated: These softeners regenerate according to the amount of water you use. They tend to be more efficient in regard to salt usage.
  • Timer Regenerated: These regenerate at set intervals of time. Timer regenerated softeners are typically less expensive than other designs.
  • Manually Regenerated: These softeners allow you to choose when they regenerate, which is ideal for softeners that attach to garden hoses.
