How Does a Water Softener Work?

You’ve spent hours scrubbing your glassware, but those stubborn smudge marks keep reappearing. This is just one of many signs that your home’s supply contains high levels of calcium and magnesium. While these compounds aren’t inherently dangerous, they can cause damage to your plumbing and react with certain detergents to form sticky soap scum and marks on your dishware.

A water softening system works by stripping magnesium and calcium ions from your home’s hard water and replacing them with sodium ions. Unlike the aforementioned elements, sodium does not have a negative reaction when it mixes with your dish soap or other cleaning products and will instead improve the effectiveness of your detergents.

Typically, a water softener is installed near the point where water diverts from the water supply system and first enters your home’s plumbing. This helps prevent the steady buildup of mineral deposits, minimizing damage to your pipes and fittings.

At Tri-County Water Services, we offer a complete water analysis to help determine your water’s contents. Our pros will visit your home, sample and test your water, and provide you with a full report of the results, including a range of water treatment options and recommended solutions to help you find the best water softener for your home.
